DeLorean accused of plagiarism with ‘Time Machine’ retelling

Five months after the auto industry’s recovery, it appeared DeLorean She faces serious charges of plagiarism with her new electric sports car Alpha 5. The model was revealed in March of this year as a Modern reinterpretation from the classic DMC-12The coupe immortalized in the movie Back to the futureSuch as Dr. Brown’s Time Machine.

Looking back in time, DMC-12 (pictured above) starred in a trilogy starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. Thus, it is still worshiped all over the world for four decades. However, the new Alpha 5, despite being inspired by the classic DeLorean, is allegedly “stolen” from Karma Automotive.

Since 2014, the company belongs to the Chinese group Wanxiang. Previously, it was called Fisker and built the Karma Hybrid Super Sports with the advanced technology of that time. By the way, to this day, the model is considered the first plug-in hybrid luxury car, which is recharged in sockets.

Anyway, both Karma and DeLorean are currently based in California (USA). And they will have a long dispute in the courts. That’s because Karma’s claim includes four of DeLorean’s top executives. The supercar maker claims DeLorean’s founders stole its intellectual property. The company was working on a new supercar based on the DMC-12.

According to the lawsuit, the quartet drove a side project for the DMC-12 while at Karma Automotive. This way, they would have handed over the design information to DeLorean Reimagined, where they would later be joined. They argue that the DeLorean Alpha 5 has nothing in common with the – unrealized – Project Karma.

According to international media, Joost de Vries, CEO of DeLorean, has denied any wrongdoing. At first, he claimed that Alpha 5 was created entirely from karma. to me San Antonio Express NewsDe Vries stated, “The potential Karma/DMC project died due to Karma’s inability to fund or achieve the desired results. This includes until negotiations with DMC progress.”

For the CEO, “DeLorean Motors Reimagined is aiming for something completely new.” “So, it has nothing to do with the low-volume replica project. This car strives for specific and unique proportions. Everything varies, from design and engineering, to supply chain and manufacturing,” the CEO defends.

Alpha 5 is a futuristic novel

It may sound familiar, but it’s no exaggeration to say that Alpha 5 is a futuristic reimagining of the DMC-12. The electric sports car comes with a very modern look. It even brings little memories of the box coupe of the early ’80s. The most nostalgic detail is the gull-wing doors, which open upwards. For the rest, it displays bulging shapes.

At the moment, Alpha5 is not fully detailed. But some are public. The size, for example, is close to that of the Porsche Taycan, which is also electric. DeLorean is large, measuring 4.99 meters long, 2.04 meters wide and only 1.37 meters high. But the wheelbase of 2.30 meters seems modest for the four (2 + 2) seats.

According to DeLorean, the discriminant is the drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.23. It definitely helps with performance. The Alpha5 accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 2.99 seconds – less than 3 seconds. The promised maximum speed is 250 km / h. For CEO Joos de Vries, “Alpha5 is for people who love to drive.”

The car manufacturer also confirmed the battery pack specifications. It will have a powerful capacity of 100 kWh, which is enough to provide a range of up to 483 km when fully charged. At the moment, there are no details about charging, but it is envisaged that the Alpha5 will be able to recharge at high power plants (150 kW or more) in a short period of time.

Alpha 5 and three other concepts

Soon after showing off her electric supercar, DeLorean created three more cars. In July, the brand published photos of three prototypes of possible models of the future. One of them is an SUV with a modern look and a powerful volume. There is also a crossover and a coupe with aerodynamic lines. In this sense, it is noteworthy that the three compounds continue DMC-24a test car from the early eighties and did not get off the ground.
