In recent months, the number of people who died of sudden illness has risen, and many of these deaths are those who contracted the Covid-19 virus. Dr. Ines Bisoli, cardiologist and CTI coordinator at Badim Hospital, explains the reasons why the disease is associated with these conditions.
Among the manifestations of Covid are those of a cardiac nature, with myocarditis, which is myocarditis, acute myocardial infarction, and arrhythmia. In addition, since Covid is a disease that increases the risk of thrombosis, ie a hypercoagulable state, there is an increased risk of thromboembolic events such as deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and stroke.
Medicine has also determined that the number of heart diseases among the infected has increased. This occurred because “cardiac manifestations are common in patients with severe COVID-19”.
“But because Covid is a disease of a hypercoagulable and inflammatory state, it can affect the heart of anyone with the disease, with microvascular impairment, systemic inflammatory response, myocarditis and hypoxia, which is a low concentration of oxygen in the blood,” he adds.
The consequences have also raised concerns. The most common are fatigue, shortness of breath (dyspnea), coughing, changes in smell and taste, pulmonary and renal fibrosis, and dialysis may be required. “How long can emotional symptoms last, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, cognitive changes such as loss of concentration and memory changes, insomnia. A person can also experience hair loss, sweating, diarrhea, tachycardia, dizziness, joint pain, and muscle pain,” the doctor explains.
Those left with heart complications can still be treated, however, it all depends on the case. “Patients who have developed myocarditis due to Covid can recover after appropriate treatment, but in some severe cases of Covid the patient can develop heart failure, a condition without treatment, but with control through the medications indicated for each case and supervised physical activity This is why a medical evaluation after recovery is so important,” says Dr. Besoli.
Patients with Covid-19 have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those patients who did not have the disease. He adds that the more severe the manifestation of Covid, the greater the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Should everyone with covid look for a cardiologist?
The doctor ensures that everyone with the disease should seek a cardiologist to know their health condition. He notes that “it is a thrombotic and inflammatory disease, and cardiac changes can occur in any case of Covid-19, which was not seen during the acute phase of the disease.”
Even, to exercise, it is important to have a medical report. “It is important for anyone who intends to start physical activity to seek out a specialist and have an evaluation done for heart conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In the case of patients who have had Covid, this measure is absolutely necessary, because the disease can develop with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. in the muscles of the heart,” he comments.
Finally, it gives advice on how people can take care of themselves after getting infected, even if they have been vaccinated. “A person who tests positive for Covid-19, without symptoms, without respiratory symptoms or with no fever, should be isolated for five days from the onset of symptoms or the result of a RT-PCR test, so that they do not become infected with other people.”
The test must be repeated after the fifth day in order to be able to leave the isolation in case the test result is negative. If the test is still positive, isolation should be extended to seven days. Coming out of isolation only with no symptoms in the past 24 hours. In the event of symptoms during this period, the isolation must be extended up to 10 days. In all these cases, it is necessary to maintain the use of the mask and clean hands. People with Covid or who are immunosuppressed due to illness or who are using immunosuppressive medications must quarantine for 20 days. It concludes that it is only possible to return if there has been no fever or antipyretic use in the past 24 hours.”
