Immigrants can experience many types of grief, but some conditions can cause Ulysses syndrome.

The Argentine poet Juan Gilman (1930-2014) said: “You must not drive people out of your land or country, not by force.”

But there are about 281 million international migrants worldwide (3.6% of the world’s population), according to 2020 United Nations data.

Some people migrate because they want to, but others are forced to migrate. At the end of 2019, more than 79.5 million people were forcibly displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Willingly or not, the migrants can feel, in Gilman’s words, a “wild plant” whose roots extend thousands of miles from the stem and leaves.
