Detecting mental health disorders in primary care is a method for early treatment such as depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse and other substance abuse.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that public health systems implement community-based procedures and services to train professionals working in this phase.
As a partner in this work, the Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital established “Mental Health in Primary Health Care (APS)”, an initiative implemented within the scope of Proadi-SUS (Program to Support Institutional Development of the Unified Health System), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Conass (the Council National Health Trustees).
Nurse Anna Alice Freire de Souza, mental health technology coordinator at the Center for Primary Health Care and New Projects and Services at Einstein, explains.
“With proper listening and attention, every medical consultation can be a mental health consultation. During the routine care of a pregnant woman or the elderly, for example, a professional can determine if there is suffering,” he notes.
The project covers 63 municipalities in three states: Maranhão, Goiás and Rondônia. In addition to revisiting the working procedures of primary health care services through health care planning, Einstein’s team will train approximately 800 professionals in the use of the Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) Intervention Guide, a clinical guide to counseling and seeking mental health care organized by the Organization of Health for Countries American. (American Health Organization).
Operational phases are being implemented, with planning and control workshops and workshops and tutorials targeting state, regional and municipal technical teams and primary health care professionals with a focus on the organization of the mental health care line. Simultaneously with these activities, 12 groups for training manual multipliers are planned, which will be able to train all teams in the area.
Souza says the expectation is that all professionals who are multiples — those of about 800 who are trained — will graduate this year and, in the second half of 2022, begin to transfer their knowledge to other primary health care workers in the areas where they work In which. The program is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
“Eventually, we will have a very important number of trained professionals and services ready for this look,” he asserts.
Another point Souza has made is that when it comes to mental health, disorders such as depression and anxiety are often discussed. The debate about alcohol and other substance abuse ends up being sidelined.
“These are problems that can be managed in primary care when agents are prepared for this approach,” he says.
The mental health of children and adolescents is also neglected. “That is why we are preparing a material on life skills, in which professionals will be able to suggest games and other activities with their youngest so that they can have a conversation with them,” he says.
“One of our missions, and all of our responsibility with SUS, is that our program doesn’t just wind up, and when the project ends, everything stops. The idea is that we can institutionalize and spread these practices as much as possible,” he says.
What is Broadi-SUS?
The Unified Health System Institutional Development Support Program was established in 2009 with the objective of supporting and improving SUS through human resource training projects, research, evaluation, technology integration, management, and specialized assistance requested by the Ministry of Health. health.
Currently, the program brings together six hospitals that are a reference in medical care and management quality: Alimão Oswaldo Cruz Hospital, BP – A Beneficência Portugaluesa de São Paulo, HCor, Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital, Moinhos de Vento Hospital and Sírio-Libanês Hospital.
Proadi-SUS resources come from the tax immunity of participating hospitals. The projects bring to residents the expertise of these organizations in initiatives that meet the needs of SUS. Among the main benefits of Proadi-SUS are the reduction of waiting lines, the qualification of professionals, the research in the interest of public health for the current needs of the Brazilian population, the management of care supported by artificial intelligence, and the improvement of the management of public hospitals and improved hospitals throughout Brazil.
