Yann Sommer would probably never have thought that his first days in Munich would be so hectic. After the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Köln on Tuesday night, the house blessing in Munich is woefully wrong. again.
On the one hand, there is the trip of the unlucky former Serge Gnabry, who went to Paris Fashion Week on his Sunday off and was heavily criticized for it by sporting director Salihamidžić after the game. .
And then there are the personal details of goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalović. With the news of their split from the 42-year-old, the Munich side have caused an unexpected staff shake-up which will affect the club’s future as well.
“It’s an internal assessment at the club,” said goalkeeper Yann Sommer. In 2023 alone, it has already had three goalkeeper coaches and a fourth will now be added. With Tapalović, “there was never any cooperation in the coaching staff,” coach Nagelsmann said on Tuesday evening. However, he reportedly enjoyed a good reputation among gamers.
Tapalović worked in Munich for eleven and a half years and helped Manuel Neuer become the best goalkeeper in the world. And beyond? Manuel Neuer described Tapalović as a “pioneer”, but it didn’t go down well in the league.
“It is striking that FC Bayern does not produce a player as a goalkeeper who then asserts himself at least in other clubs in the first or second division”, summarizes goalkeeper expert Sascha Felter in a interview with Watson.
“Compared to other Bundesliga goalkeeper coaches, he is less innovative. For years he only worked with Manuel Neuer – which isn’t bad either. But he didn’t have a lasting impact on goalkeepers for several years.”

FC Bayern: Tapalović and Neuer took advantage of each other
Neuer and Tapalović share a close friendship. When extending his contract in Munich, Neuer is said to have always made it a condition that his friend stays as well. Therefore, Feter explains:
“For him, the coaching aspect played a major role. I think he benefited enormously from having a very intelligent goalkeeper in Neuer, who lent a hand to himself. Both benefited from the one another.”
But now Tapalović is gone – and Neuer with his contract expiring in the summer of 2024 too? The departure allows at least to interpret that, contrary to all assurances, the Munich team does not believe 100% that Neuer will return to his world-class form.
In the fall of his career, the 36-year-old again went through some changes. In the national team, Andreas Kronenberg replaced Andreas Köpke after 17 years. Now he has a new coach for his position at the club.
“The new entry certainly can’t hurt him. As a goalkeeper coach at this level, it’s all in the details. Experienced goalkeepers know exactly what they need and then plan the training week according to their needs,” says goalkeeper expert Felter.
FC Bayern: The new goalkeeper coach offers a great opportunity
The departure of the longtime goalkeeping coach may also be an opportunity for Bayern Munich.
Tapalović’s work and drills at FC Bayern have focused on Manuel Neuer over the years. There was no question of allowing a young goalkeeper to evolve in the shadows as number 2 or 3 at the same time. This should also have been a reason why Bayern bosses decided to be fired.
Added to this is the lack of communication with Alexander Nübel, on loan to Monaco. He was actually meant to be Neuer’s long-term successor, but never had a real relationship with Tapalović.
For goalkeeper experts Felter, it is clear that Tapalović will not be replaced by an inexperienced goalkeeper coach. Moreover, he considers the Michael computer from Hoffenheim to be the ideal solution. The 42-year-old and Nagelsmann have known each other since their time at TSG Hoffenheim and were already keen on each other back then.

The calculator would bring a huge advantage: “He is very familiar with conceptual work with goalkeepers. At Hoffenheim, he built a very good goalkeeping school over the years.”
Along with Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Marvin Schwäbe (Cologne), Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg) and Gregor Kobel (Dortmund), he coached and trained four of the current Bundesliga goalkeepers. Moreover, Gladbach’s goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte was previously part of the IT team.
In Johannes Schenk (20) and Tom Ritzy Hülsmann (18), the Munich team already had two promising goalkeeping talents with them during the training camp in Qatar.
FC Bayern: Nübel not at the level of Bayern
Until the end of the second half of the season, however, Yann Sommer is Bayern’s number one goalkeeper. With the 34-year-old, Munich would have “only bought one to two years” because Feter does not believe in Alexander Nübel’s future with the record champions. The 26-year-old doesn’t have the high level Munich need:
“He has athletic deficits and still some weaknesses in the zone defence. He is very reserved, especially with flat balls that go through the penalty area. Moreover, he always has slapstick actions with him. He doesn’t have any not had this season made clear mistakes but again and again plays he has a hand in which led to goals conceded All in all too many mistakes if you want to be in goal at the Bayern.”
For the goalkeeper expert, it is therefore clear that the Munich team must make an effort to get Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund. As the ‘Kicker’ reported a week ago, the Swiss should be a future contender for Neuer’s successor.
CEO Oliver Kahn is currently surprised by these rumors. He finds it much more legitimate that Nübel “wants to come back to Munich on condition that there is playing time”.
Jude Bellingham has been delighting BVB fans for two and a half years now. At just 17, the midfielder came to Dortmund in 2020, immediately impressed and played almost all the time.
