The long uncertainty among the record champions is over. After the struggle to find a suitable successor for injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the restart of the Bundesliga could take place with the new Yann Sommer in the starting XI. Coach Julian Nagelsmann has resisted criticism from outside to let the summer come first. According to critics, Bayern’s number two goalkeeper Sven Ulreich should have been in place instead.

But from the start, Sommer conceded a goal. The Munich team only managed a draw against RB Leipzig on Friday night (1-1). “Sometimes it was good, sometimes we can do things better,” coach Nagelsmann commented on the result. He said of the newcomer in goal: “Brave. Intercepted three or four crosses and played well with the ball. It didn’t look like he was making the first game for us.”

Asked about the game itself, the goalkeeper spoke to DAZN about his own impressions of the Bundesliga restart: “It’s clear that not everything worked out one hundred percent,” he explained. “I don’t know the team yet, they don’t know me yet. The processes haven’t been coordinated yet, especially when it comes to building the game.”

Yann Sommer raises his advertising arm – and the network compares him to Neuer
In one thing, he probably took Manuel Neuer as a model. At least as far as the many comments on the net are concerned. The reason is a specific gesture the Swiss made on his Bayern debut: when the ball landed in the goal by Halstenberg in the 52nd minute, Sommer immediately raised his arm in protest, a typical Neuer gesture. What the Swiss wanted to complain about: Teammate Joshua Kimmich and Leipzig’s André Silva had already had a falling out. Referee Siebert saw no foul.
The DAZN streaming service took advantage of this gesture to write a post with a photo of the scene in question. Then the words: “Manuel Neuer likes it”. In the caption, the service asks its subscribers to name the best complaint arm joke. With this, DAZN seemingly cuts into its own flesh. Comment with the most likes: “The complaint arm is as high as DAZN prices.” A reaction to the recently increased subscription fees.

But fans are also reacting quickly to the alleged new gesture. “You can tell me what you want. It’s sewn into the jersey or something like that”, writes a user who receives a lot of encouragement. Another thinks: “Oh, that’s why everyone says summer can replace Neuer.” Another follower writes: “There was no time to do more in one day of training…”
There are signs of competition between Sommer and Neuer
From Tuesday, January 24, it will become clear how Sommer will fare in the Munich goal. Then the record champion receives Cologne. How Bayern continue to perform in the Bundesliga could be important for Sommer’s future, but also for injured Neuer.
A competition is looming. Eventually, Neuer will return once he’s up and running. Sommer’s contract runs until 2025. A great vote of confidence.

After the match, Sommer explained how he views the situation. As a result, everything was discussed openly with him. He now looks forward to the months to come. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has already indicated that the Swiss national goalkeeper can certainly have hopes. Asked about the long duration of the contract, ultimately a sign of great confidence, the sporting director replied: “Good question, answer it.”
The reactions of the last few weeks could not have been more emotional. After a break of almost six months due to a diagnosis of testicular cancer, Sébastien Haller celebrated his return to a football match at training camp in a test against Fortuna Düsseldorf (5:1). For the first time, the Ivorian wore the Borussia Dortmund jersey. A few days later, in a friendly match against Basel, he scored for the BVB for the first time and even scored a hat-trick.
