On striker Sébastien Haller’s Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund, BVB beat uncomfortable FC Augsburg. Borussia lost the match three times between the two.
On Sunday (01/22/2023), Borussia Dortmund won 4:3 (2:2). Striker Haller, who has recovered from cancer, made his league debut for BVB. The game was decided by jokers Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (75th) and Giovanni Reyna (78th). Dortmund’s other goals were scored by Jude Bellingham (30′) and Nico Schlotterbeck (42′). Augsburg equalized three times thanks to Arne Maier (40th), Ermedin Demirovic (45th+1) and David Colina (77th).
“It was definitely too exciting,” BVB coach Edin Terzic told Sportschau: “A lot of things went well, but there are still a lot of negative things.” However, his team showed they could defy “all resistance”. FCA coach Enrico Maaßen, who coached Dortmund U23 until the summer of 2022, explained: “After 30 minutes we lost our shyness. It’s very boring then to get two shots on Sunday and a free kick.”

The newly formed BVB first controls Augsburg
At Dortmund, new right-back Julian Ryerson was in the starting XI. Youssoufa Moukoko started in front after his contract extension. BVB played in 4-1-4-1. Before the winter break, Dortmund played mainly in 4-2-3-1. In Augsburg, winter reinforcements Arne Engels and Dion Beljo, who replaced striker Florian Niederlechner (Hertha BSC), who had migrated, started.
The match started intensely. Ruben Vargas had to be replaced after a foul by Mats Hummels, the winter signing of Irvin Cardona came (12th). After a standard, Demirovic hits the crossbar (13th). But little came out of the game for the guests.
It was different at BVB, who often played apart from the FCA men’s cover. Newcomer Ryerson has also shown attacking drive. The ex-Unioner had often acted outside in a chain of five in Berlin.
Bellingham dances, Schlotterbeck dreams – then scores
One in particular stood out at BVB: Jude Bellingham, who used his more attacking role in the center in front of six Salih Özcan. He was strong in tackles, distributed the balls wisely and was sure when dribbling. After half an hour, 19-year-old Engels faltered before his shot hit the goal.
BVB coach Edin Terzic had ‘goosebumps before the game’
But after FCA’s first offensive action, the ball was suddenly in the BVB net. Schlotterbeck made an error after a pass from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Beljo stole the ball from him and hung up for Maier.
Augsburg efficiency: Demirovic fooled Dortmund
The German national defender only made up for his mistake a little later. Apparently, the BVB had also worked on the problem of standards during the winter preparations: Julian Brandt’s free kick was used by Schlotterbeck to lead again.
But as on several occasions this season, Augsburg has been very effective in Dortmund despite an inferior game. Engels sent on Demirovic, who held off Hummels and leveled the score again – with FCA’s fourth shot on goal. Dortmund had already given up 16.
For Augsburg coach Enrico Maaßen “every opponent is a big plateau”
Haller celebrates debut, FCA third equalizer
After the restart, the hosts’ game lost momentum. Augsburg didn’t allow much and also took the first three shots on goal after the break. BVB coach Edin Terzic then decided on a whim and brought in Haller, who was loudly celebrated by supporters for his league debut for Dortmund (62nd). Moukoko had to give in after an unconvincing performance.
Dortmund’s Julian Brandt – ‘Trust our nerves’
But two other BVB wildcards forced their way into the limelight: First Bynoe-Gittens sent the ball into the far corner to make it 3-2, and Reyna also scored a dream goal. A minute earlier, Colina of Augsburg had scored the third equalizing goal of the day. Demirovic almost scored a fourth time to equalize, but missed FCA’s last big chance (89th).
Dortmund to Mainz, Augsburg to Gladbach
During the 17th day of the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund is challenged in Mainz (Wednesday, 6.30 p.m.). Two hours later, FC Augsburg receives Borussia Mönchengladbach.
