Result: Kriechmayr dominates the Streif – Dreßen in 13th place
World champion and local hero Vincent Kriechmayr has for the first time in his career the Departure on the legendary Streif in Kitzbühel won. The Austrian won the spectacular race on Friday, feared by many skiers, ahead of the surprising second Florian Schieder of Italy (+0.23 seconds) and the Swiss Niels Hintermann (+0.31).
Injury-ridden Thomas Dreßen drove like the best German in 13th place, Andreas Sander ran in 15th place. Romed Baumann, Josef Ferstl and Dominik Schwaiger again disappointed by finishing 32nd, 49th and 55th. Favorites Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway (16th) and Marco Odermatt of Switzerland (54th) made a mistake and could only prevent a fall through artistic performances.
A bad crash by Norwegian Henrik Røa eclipsed the world’s most dangerous downhill. The 27-year-old rolled over shortly before crossing the finish line and had to be transported by rescue helicopter. The race was interrupted for a long time.
On the Streif, athletes reach top speeds of 140 km/h. The maximum slope is 85%, jumps are up to 80 meters. On Saturday there is a second downhill in Kitzbühel for the men.
Descent on the Streif: it’s different this year
This year, for the first time, there will be a downhill on Friday, not like in previous years a Super-G or a downhill that had been canceled elsewhere and therefore made up for. And: unlike last year, when only 1,000 spectators were allowed due to Corona measures, a total of 85,000 visitors are expected this time around. Officially, 25,000 tickets are sold per race – plus free tickets, VIP tickets, sponsors, etc.
Weather: Is there enough snow on the Streif?
The snow cover on the Streif and on the Ganslern was more than sufficient at the beginning of the week – and well prepared. Besides the race tracks, things have been going as well since Wednesday – it snowed. The rain that lasted until Thursday is not a problem for the organizers: “We prefer to shovel the snow from the inside to the outside rather than from the outside to the inside,” said the director of Mario Mittermayer-Weinhandl race.
