It starts again! After more than two months, the ball is rolling again in the Bundesliga. The two remaining matchdays of the first half of the season will be played in an English week, starting on Sunday (January 22, 2023, 5:30 p.m.).
At the end of the 16th day, Borussia Mönchengladbach receives Bayer Leverkusen at home in Borussia Park. How will the two teams emerge from the winter break? And will new goalkeeper Jonas Omlin (29) be in goal from the start and will he make his Bundesliga debut?

2:27 p.m.: So there are no more questions, the press conference is over.
2:26 p.m.: Roland Virkus is asked about Dario Osorio, who is a subject in Gladbach according to South American media. “There are a lot of interesting players,” was the reply. “But I can’t say anything about him.”
2:25 p.m.: A good start after the long break will be important, the coach said. Maintaining or extending the lead over Leverkusen is the big goal. Of course, he wanted to put an exclamation point. The game will be important, but there are more important games to come.
2:23 p.m.: Farke doesn’t want to expect too much from Florian Neuhaus. After such a long injury break, he still needs time to get back to his level. It is important that he himself does not become too impatient. He will have plenty of time to get back to his best level, then he will be an important factor again in the second half of the season.

2:22 p.m.: The team needs a lot of emotion and mentality in this game. Farke hopes the fans and ‘Fortress Borussia Park’ will keep Leverkusen at bay.
2:20 p.m.: “Leverkusen are a club used to playing in the Champions League,” said Farke. In his eyes, the team has exceptional potential. “There’s already a board coming our way.” But the shape curve points upwards. His team had to be tactically smart and not give Leverkusen the space to use speed. Farke wants to have a lot of ball possession.
2:18 p.m.: After the long break, it’s straight into an English week. Farke believes his experienced team can handle the situation. Certainly, we cannot repeat an emergency in test matches and the English week with three matches in six days, including two away, could be a bit “borderline”. However, the coach does not want to give any alibis.
2:16 p.m.: Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram will stay at Gladbach ‘from today’, according to Virkus. He is also still hoping for contract extensions. There is no indication that the two players are clearly opposed. But he also doesn’t want to promise that they’ll both stick around beyond the summer.

2:14 p.m.: Virkus is again asked about Jonas Omlin. Because of his size, he could be more offensive on the flanks than Yann Sommer and also more athletic. But the summer was “the measure” in terms of football. Virkus wants Omlin to have time to adapt to the league and feel the support of the fans. It will take him some time to get used to it.
2:13 p.m.: Farke and Virkus can’t say much about Alonso’s style of play as a coach. “You always have to work on your idea,” explains the sporting director. Leverkusen have a good squad, but in which direction Alonso will develop is more likely to be told at the end of the season.
2:11 p.m.: “Xabi Alonso was an absolute world-class player,” Farke said of the opposition coach. That’s why he has a great coaching career ahead of him. With Leverkusen he has a team with a very large number of good technical players. But as a non-native speaker, it’s not easy for him.
2:10 p.m.: Farke is asked about alternatives to Thuram. He would think Christoph Kramer capable of the job, he jokes. Nathan Ngoumou is an alternative, as is Lars Stindl. Semir Telalovic might also have a chance to play. Also, there might be a “creative solution” that hasn’t been tried yet.
2:08 p.m.: Yvandro Borges Sanches will definitely be out, Farke said. There is a question mark behind Marcus Thuram. So far, the Frenchman hasn’t trained with the team, his commitment is ‘very questionable’. It will depend on whether it is completely painless. If he could participate in the last training session tomorrow, it would be possible to play.
2:07 p.m.: Farke leaves open whether Omlin will play on Sunday. It’s of course something special when a player arrives who hasn’t played a test match. He couldn’t overload him with information in the early days. However, Omlin is an experienced lad and as he has already played competitive matches in recent weeks, there is little to be said against an assignment.
2:05 p.m.: Daniel Farke has a “very good first impression” of Jonas Omlin. Goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte watched many of his games. Omlin is a very intelligent young man who is not considered one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1 for nothing. The Swiss is said to have made a good first impression in training as well.
2:04 p.m.: Virkus underlines once again that Yann Sommer has always behaved perfectly. “For me it shows what kind of person Yann is. We wish him all the best in Munich.
2:03 p.m.: Roland Virkus opens up and talks about the changes in the goalkeeper position. Sommer approached him and said he would like to do the “Challenge Bayern Munich”. There was no doubt the club would be concerned as Sommer was a deserved player. The day before yesterday, Bayern agreed to the terms.
2:02 p.m.: Roland Virkus and Daniel Farke are there, the press conference begins.
1:30 p.m.: The press conference starts in half an hour. In addition to the interaction in goal, the situation of the personnel in attack will certainly be an issue. Will Marcus Thuram (25) be back in time for Sunday?
11:21 a.m.: The departure of Yann Sommer (34 years old) and the simultaneous engagement of Jonas Omlin (29 years old) were announced yesterday. Will the new signing celebrate his Bundesliga debut on Sunday?
11:17 a.m.: Before the Bundesliga duel against Leverkusen on Sunday, Borussia Mönchengladbach invited themselves to a press conference this Friday (January 20). Foal trainer Daniel Farke (46) and sporting director Roland Virkus (56) will answer questions from media representatives at Borussia Park from 2 p.m. The most important statements are then available here in the GladbachLIVE ticker.
Thursday January 19
11:19 p.m.: Freddy Harder then acts as moderator, with Marco Hagemann commenting on the game. The expert is Sebastian Kneißl.
11:17 p.m.: If you want to follow the Foals match on TV, you can do so via the “DAZN” streaming service, which will be broadcast live from 4:45 p.m.
10:59 p.m.: There are still a few tickets left for the first game after the World Cup break on the secondary ticket market of Borussia Mönchengladbach.
10:47 p.m.: Sommer will no longer be in goal for Gladbach, the 34-year-old has moved to Bayern Munich. Instead, the new number one is Jonas Omlin, who could make his debut on Sunday.
10:31 p.m.: In pre-season, the “Werkself” beat the “Fohlen” 4-0 and 2-1. When they met at Borussia Park on January 15, 2022, goalkeeper Yann Sommer saved two penalties but couldn’t prevent the narrow loss.
10:27 p.m.: Leverkusen have won all of the last five games against Gladbach, Gladbach’s last win was over three years ago (2-1 on November 2, 2019).
10:13 p.m.: The two clubs met for the 81st time in the Bundesliga. The record speaks for the guests, they won 32 duels. Gladbach succeeded 22 times, 16 games ended in a draw.
