Australian Open live in the ticker: Nadal under pressure, Maria and Siegemund in the starting blocks

Defending champion Rafael Nadal (Spain/N°2) is in the second round of the Australian Open in Melbourne. There he met the American Mackenzie Mcdonald (ATP n°63).

The Spaniard is currently in action at the Rod Laver Arena. Previously, the Polish world number one played on center court Iga Swiatek against Camila Osorio (Colombia) and clearly won 6:2, 6:3.

Some of Tuesday’s games, which had to be postponed due to heat and rain, are also scheduled to end on Wednesday. However, it also rained in Melbourne on Wednesday. Thus, the matches of the first round of Tatiana Maria (Bad Saulgau) and Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) postponed again.

The most important games at a glance:

  • M. McDonald (USA) – R. Nadal (ESP/1) 6:4, 6:4, 7:5
  • NOW: L Stefanini (ITA/Q) – T Maria (GER)
  • NOW: L.Bronzetti (ITA) – L. Siegemund (GER)
  • From 9 a.m.: E. Raducanu (GBR) – C. Gauff (USA/7)
  • From 9 a.m.: J. Millman (AUS/WC) – D. Medvedev (—/7)
  • Not before 10:30 a.m.: S. Tsitsipas (GRE/3) – R. Hijikata (AUS/WC)

7:44 – Stefanini – Maria 2:3

It’s raining again and the match is currently suspended. But the women have not yet left the field. There are still reasons to hope that it will only be a short break.

7:40 a.m. – Stefanini – Maria 1:3

However, Maria must also accept a break. Stefanini uses his third chance to win the point at the net and reduces it to 1:3.

7:37 – Stefanini – Maria 0:3

Dream start for Tatjana Maria. The German took two service games from her opponent Lucrezia Stefanini of Italy early on and led 3-0 in the first set.

7:34 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 5-7

This is by no means to say that McDonald’s only won here because of Nadal’s injury. On the contrary: the American boy was already the best player on the pitch and even played weaker than before after his opponent got injured. He rightfully bought the third-round ticket.

7:31 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 5-7

And that was it. McDonald converts the match ball at 7:5 in the third set. It’s a very strange atmosphere in the stadium. In fact, it had been clear for almost an hour that Nadal couldn’t win this anymore. Nothing had improved either. He hasn’t been able to move towards the balls properly since the injury.

7:26 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 5-6

Three break points for McDonald’s. And the American uses the number two with a passing shot that Nadal only deals with. The end of the game is approaching.

7:21 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 5-4

Breaking the chance for McDonald, but Nadal pushes back with an ace. The Iberian continues to play in a completely atypical way, trying to keep rallies as short as possible, while McDonald was playing much better before Nadal’s injury. The defending champion gets the serve to make it 5:4. From his opponent’s perspective, it shouldn’t be like this, but it’s a difficult situation for everyone involved.

7:17 a.m. Molcan-Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 2-6

Auger-Aliassime did after all. In five sets, the Canadian solves the ticket for the third round.

7:15 a.m. – Start of the game on the outdoor courts

The action starts slowly on the outside courts. Among others, Tatjana Maria and Laura Siegemund intervene from a German point of view.

7:11 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 3-3

Even though the third set score still looks pretty good to him, the style of play isn’t. As before, Nadal can hardly pass through the balls. And the defending champ would still have to go three sets if he wants to win this. Of course, you should never write him off, but right now it’s a mystery to me how he’s supposed to do that.

The memorable scene:

7:02 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6, 2-2

Ironically, since Nadal’s injury, McDonald’s has also weakened. The American apparently does not know how to react. Nadal continues to make almost no movement towards the balls, but his opponent isn’t letting him run now either. 2:2 Nevertheless: Despite everything, things don’t look good for Nadal.

6:56 a.m. Molcan-Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 1-3

It’s also very hard work for another favorite today. After trailing 2-0 in sets, Félix Auger-Aliassime is now on course for the third round against Slovak Alex Molcan.

6:48 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-6

McDonald served to win the set. And after a forehand error from Nadal, his opponent has the ball in the first set. Again, Nadal errs with the forehand and has to give up the pass 4:6. The Spaniard also plays uncharacteristically for him, trying to complete rallies quickly, which leads to mistakes.

6:43 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 4-5

Nadal is back and trying to continue the game. At the moment, standing tennis is the favourite, but that’s helped by the fact that McDonald’s now only plays in midcourt. Nadal at least wins his match at 4-5.

6:36 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 3-5

Nadal left the field for treatment and hobbled. It really doesn’t look good.

06:32 Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 3-5

That too. Nadal gets stuck on the ground trying to reach a ball and is unable to cross. Then the Spaniard can no longer run towards the balls. The game wins McDonald’s at 5:3, then Nadal immediately takes the medical time-out. Let’s hope this can continue.

6:28 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 3-4

While the outdoor courts now have games rescheduled for 7:00 a.m., McDonald’s has breakball. And then Nadal serves really hard. But on the return, McDonald takes his opponent on the wrong foot and causes the error. Break for the underdog at 4:3.

6:20 a.m. – Rain delays matches

Heavy rain meant it was not yet possible to start on the outdoor courts. It has now stopped raining and the match should start around 6:30 CET. Then we will also see Tatjana Maria and Laura Siegemund, among others.

6:15 a.m. Nadal-McDonald 4-6, 3-2

The defending champion’s match has already started. Rafael Nadal meets American MacKenzie McDonald. And it’s hard work for the favorite who lost the first set. In the second round, the Spaniard was already a break behind, but he was able to catch up.
