- After the separation from Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea fell into gray mediocrity.
- National player Kai Havertz stopped the slide with his winning goal against Crystal Palace.
- In full swing with the “Blues”, the ex-Leverkusener is considered a candidate for sale.
Football moves fast, business is relentless. So it was
Havertz has now given an answer on the pitch: Against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Premier League Matchday 20, he scored the important 1-0 win, which at least temporarily relieved some of the pressure on the kettle. It was the first hat-trick of the year with which the Londoners stopped a worrying run in the league, Chelsea had previously won just one of nine games.
“Not easy in these circumstances”
“The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult. It’s not easy for everyone at the club under these circumstances,” Havertz said after the game. Because the surprising change of coach from Thomas Tuchel to Graham Potter in September fizzled, after a good start the fall into gray mediocrity followed.
Still in the Champions League after the twelfth day, the Londoners went into freefall in mid-October. It was then that they last won an away game in the league. Chelsea were also knocked out of the League Cup and the FA Cup. What remains of title dreams is the premier class, where Chelsea meet Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 (February 15 and March 7).
As well as Havertz, Potter is also a face of the crash, in the truest sense of the word, as the 47-year-old is now also externally marked with deep dark circles under his eyes. He’s been under more and more pressure lately, and fans are calling for the return of
Potter currently has a point average of 1.55. It’s only marginally better than Guus Hiddink, who coached the Londoners on an interim basis between 2015 and 2016 and has the worst points average in 20 years at 1.52 points per game. For comparison: Tuchel’s average was 2.07.
Potter breathes a sigh of relief after winning the job
Potter came from Brighton for 17 million euros to revamp the club and get the team back on track. Instead, they moved away from it – as tenth in the table, the gap to leaders FC Arsenal is already 19 points, in fourth place in the Champions League there are nine points. “We’re happy with the three points,” Potter said after the tough win over Crystal Palace: “You have to understand the situation we’re in. So it’s not always going to be sensational football. The guys have worked hard.”
Of course, ambitions are different from work victories. “A lot of things have changed this year. We have so many injuries, ten to twelve players injured. Today we had five young players in the starting XI who are doing a very good job at the moment,” Havertz explained. However, good is not good enough, especially not offensively. 22 goals in 19 games is far too few despite top additions like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (one goal) and Raheem Sterling (four goals). But the fact that the long list of casualties explains much of the crisis cannot be denied.
425 million euros for new players
This is why the management of the club around the American investor Todd Boehly currently follows: Benoit Badiashile (AS Monaco), David Fofana (Molde FK), Andrey Santos (Vasco da Gama), Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid) and Mykhaylo Mudryk of Shakhtar Donetsk – The latter alone for 100 million euros – should ensure a quick sporting change. Chelsea have invested around €450m in the squad since the summer and signed a total of 13 players.
As many new faces as according to “Mirror” Potter is now worried about the balance in the team once he has all the men available again. “We want more wins. You need a balanced team. You need a team that has the right level of competition,” he said. The transfer in less than almost 400 million euros ensures that the pressure remains high. There are no more excuses. That’s how business is.

Havertz takes responsibility
The fact that according to the “Telegraph” he is on the “Blues” sales list leaves Havertz cold. It’s also part of the business, after all, Chelsea have to make up the deficit one way or another. Havertz takes it sporty and is responsible for himself.
“I play on the nine and I take the responsibility to score more goals because we have to score more goals as a team. I will do my best to help the team,” he promised for the ongoing fight against crisis. Hoping that things will go quickly again in football. This time in the other direction.

Chelsea FC have surprisingly fired their German coach Thomas Tuchel. It was announced by the Premier League club on Wednesday, a day after Dinamo Zagreb’s 0-1 start to the Champions League.
