Did the super talent bet? BVB issues Moukoko’s ultimatum
Borussia Dortmund absolutely wants to give Moukoko a new contract. However, the talent is hesitant to sign as top international clubs are tempting. Sporting director Kehl therefore gave him an ultimatum until the end of the week.
The words are unequivocal: “Youssoufa can now accept this offer and commit to Borussia Dortmund – or we will go our separate ways,” Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl announced in an interview with ‘Kicker’. . “Youssoufa and his advisers know that we are expecting a decision this week because we want the matter to be clarified before the first day. So that the boy can devote himself entirely to the sporting challenges.”
The 18-year-old super talent has been at the club for seven years since joining Dortmund from FC St. Pauli’s youth department. Although he always played in a higher age bracket, the teenager caused a stir from the start with outstanding goalscoring and athletic performances. At 16, he was the youngest player in history to make his Bundesliga and Champions League debut. More recently, he made the jump to the national team and was part of the Qatar World Cup squad.
Moukoko and Borussia Dortmund negotiate
For months Moukoko advisers Patrick Williams and Kehl have been haggling over a new contract, now there is a final offer ready to be signed as officials want the case dismissed. The fact that Kehl is now publicly issuing an ultimatum to Moukoko and his adviser shows that the fronts have hardened. BVB is apparently annoyed by the stubbornness of Moukoko and his adviser.
More importantly, the club needs planning security for next season as a total of eight Dortmund contracts expire. These include the contracts of two all-time stars Marco Reus and Mats Hummles, both 34. The club wants to give them more time. But even in these cases, it is by no means certain that they will be extended. Hummels himself has already announced that he still has to think about it. Reus and his adviser are also trying to put themselves in a better negotiating position. The planning uncertainty at BVB is therefore great.
Apparently, Moukoko wants to move up a pay grade with stars like Jude Bellingham, who is just 19 and reportedly making six million euros a year. However, unlike Moukoko, Bellingham is a regular at BVB. At the Bundesliga club, we like to point out that in the post-Corona era, money is no longer so easy and we have presented more performance- and stake-oriented offers. However, it is unknown which numbers are actually in the room.
Strong negotiating position – so far
Moukoko has been in a strong negotiating position so far as he is sought after by top foreign clubs. He could presumably make more money in the English Premier League. More recently, Newcastle United are said to have offered £150,000 a week, as the Daily Evening Standard reported last Tuesday. This would equate to an annual salary of almost 8.8 million euros. Apparently his agent is counting on this pawn, at the same time Moukoko, who was born in Cameroon, stresses that he would like to stay at Borussia Dortmund. With his profile, the club would be a perfect fit for the young striker, as BVB see themselves as a training club for Europe’s top talent.
Kehl never tires of pointing out that BVB are keen to extend: “He has had incredible support from us and has himself worked hard to achieve success. For many months now we have been trying to extend his contract because we are adamant about this and are convinced that this club and this constellation suits Youssoufa’s sporting perspective (…), Kehl told the ‘kicker’.
With the ultimatum, Kehl puts pressure on the negotiating partner, who also bet for time and bet until the end. It’s over now. At the end of the week, they will find out in Dortmund whether the homegrown talent will stay or leave without pay.
