Hasan Salihamidzic is no friend of winter transfers. But he must act in January. In the tz, the sports director of FC Bayern talks about the planning of the team.

Munich – Following FC Bayern’s return from the nearly week-long training camp in Qatar, Hasan Salihamidzic spoke in detail in the tz interview about planning for the German record champions squad. The 46-year-old addresses the current goalkeeper search and the special role of CEO Oliver Kahn. Brazzo also provides an update on the injured Manuel Neuer and Sadio Mané.

Mr. Salihamidzic, at the beginning of the year, you shaved your hair very short. Why?

Hasan Salihamidzic: I’m in attack mode for the second part of the season, it’s the attack haircut (laughs).

Let’s move on to the sporting side: how does squad planning work at FC Bayern?

Salihamidzic: You need to set achievable goals. You have to balance financial goals with sporting goals. It is our task.

What role does Oliver Kahn play in this?

Salihamidzic: Olivier is the CEO. We have known each other for a long time, we get along very well and we trust each other. That makes me happy. He took advantage of his stay in Doha to make a few appointments and also to talk to me. We often exchange ideas, eat together and watch training. We complement each other very well. Of course, he is very interested and we discuss team issues.

Technical Director Marco Neppe never leaves you.

Salihamidzic: Marco and I are in constant contact. Every day we talk about games and players. We have great relationships and think strategically in the same direction. We watch a lot of football and I attend a lot of scouting meetings. But Marco works even more intensively with the scouts. Then he comes to me and we discuss the problems. In the end, we always come to the opinion that we support 100%.

And the new scout leader Markus Pilawa?

Salihamidzic: He organizes, prefilters and directs the scouting service. We are very satisfied with the way it does its job. This corresponds very well to our philosophy. He knows exactly what we need, how we seek and what we want. He is very diligent, meticulous and very good in organization. He has the understanding of football and the team that we have. This is why we have come together.

How is the collaboration with coach Julian Nagelsmann going?

Salihamidzic: We manage very well all around the team. We get along well, we communicate well and we analyze together. One can hardly imagine a better cooperation. Julian understands the club, just like we understand the coach. We complement each other perfectly.

FC Bayern: Salihamidzic talks about player selection – ‘Knowing which shelf we use’

FC Bayern also has a so-called shadow team. The scouting system puts together a team with suggestions for each position.

Salihamidzic: There are so many footballers in the world. We will see which ones suit us. For each position, we analyze what we have and what we need. We try to fill each position twice. We have divided the players into different categories for each position. We watch a lot of football, so the shadow team changes constantly. There are a lot of successful young players, but there are also players we’ve watched and like. It’s always a mix. We are very well organized and work very precisely. We watch a lot of videos, and of course our scouts are often in the stadiums to observe. Marco and I then filter it and make sure we’re always up to date.

What role does the psychological aspect play in player selection?

Salihamidzic: Above all, we look at the qualities of market players. We also pay attention to how a player behaves in different situations. It is also a question of character and mental strength. We always have to keep an eye on our financial possibilities and know in which shelves we can help ourselves.

What should the team look like in the future?

Salihamidzic: Our philosophy has always been to keep the German core if the quality is good. We also want to fill the workforce with international stars who will increase our quality and who correspond to us. I think it’s looking very good right now. The mix is right. It’s ideal. But you never get stuck in team planning and always try to change some things. And in the end, we can only do what our financial means allow us.

FC Bayern: Hasan Salihamidzic comments on possible contract extensions

The other faces of the team are Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Lucas Hernández. When do you extend their long-term contracts?

Salihamidzic: We have decided to conduct the talks. In the background, we are trying to do our job.

For years it was said that Thomas Müller was still playing. Is he still untouchable?

Salihamidzic: Thomas is someone with a lot of experience. We know what we have at Thomas. Of course, the competition at Bayern is still there. We need every player. Every player, whether young or old, will have to perform. And the best will play.

How is Manuel Neuer after his open tibia and fibula fracture?

Salihamidzic: His injury hits us hard. Manuel is fine considering the circumstances. It will probably be a few more months before he returns. But we will give him all the time in the world to recover from this serious injury and come back.

Why is it so difficult to find a replacement?

Salihamidzic: You have to see that FC Bayern finds the best possible solution for the current season. As it is not so easy in this position and then in the winter, we are very busy and consider what our options are.

FC Bayern: Hasan Salihamidzic avoids a statement on Yann Sommer

When will preferred candidate and Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer sign?

Salihamidzic: I don’t like talking about players from other clubs. There are several options we are working on.

Is an Alexander Nübel comeback campaign still relevant?

Salihamidzic: We have very good communication. But we are not in the driver’s seat. It always depends on the releasing club. As Monaco also has ideas, it’s not easy either.

What qualities does Bayern’s new goalkeeper need?

Salihamidzic: He must hold on. And our goalkeeper must also be able to play football well. He must help us for the current season. And whether his commitment goes beyond that remains to be seen.

Have you set a deadline when looking for a goalkeeper?

Salihamidzic: no The transfer period ends on January 31, but of course we would like to have a solution for the first Bundesliga game on January 20 in Leipzig.

Is it an advantage to have a former world-class goalkeeper in Oliver Kahn as a contact person for goalkeeper issues?

Salihamidzic: It is definitely an advantage. Like I said, Oliver and I talk about our team all the time.

If no new goalkeeper is to come: Do you trust substitute goalkeeper Sven Ulreich to be the first goalkeeper?

Salihamidzic: Yes of course. We spoke to Ulle and told him that we were working on what would be best for FC Bayern. We also have great confidence in Ulle. If he has played this season, he has done very well. So of course that’s also an option.

Hasan Salihamidzic: Sadio Mané still ‘a few weeks’ out – PSG games are probably too early

When is Sadio Mané coming back?

Salihamidzic: He continues his rehabilitation program. He’s on the right track, he’s on schedule. But his return will take a few more weeks.

Is it enough for the round of 16 against Paris?

Salihamidzic: You must see this. I think it will be very close. Sadio is very ambitious. But we have to see that he is recovering well from his injury.

The Bundesliga resumes next Friday in Leipzig.

Salihamidzic: Of course, we want to start the season well. It’s very important, especially against a team as good as Leipzig. We want to do the best we can on the road and win. We made the best use of training camp for that. The coaches did well what they wanted to do.
