Borussia Mönchengladbach has only ten days left to prepare for the resumption of play in the Bundesliga. It’s no wonder, then, that coach Daniel Farke (46) ordered his team back to the Borussia Park training ground after a Sunday off on Monday (January 9, 2023).

After training, the foals’ coach revealed what the current situation is in terms of personnel, what he expects from his players in the final stage of preparation and what the focus of training will be.

Preparation for Gladbach is slowly entering its final phase

Two friendly matches are on the program this week. It is important to be well prepared for this. “Friendlies will again be the main focus and of course they are of particular importance,” Gladbach coach Daniel Farke stressed after the opening session, in which he had almost all the team.

“It was a full training ground today – 24 outfield players were there. It looked pretty good,” said the Borussia coach, who is currently only worried about one player.

Youngster Yvandro Borges Sanches (18) had already missed the friendly against VfB Oldenburg and was also absent from the Foals’ training ground session on Monday afternoon.

Farke spoke openly about the reasons: “He will probably be out this week. He has a slight hip flexor tendon irritation and will certainly be unavailable for the next few days. He also won’t be able to play against Bielefeld on Wednesday. Let’s see if that’s enough for Pauli on Saturday – probably not. It’s not dramatic now, but he will definitely be absent. We have to wait and see,” was his statement about the senior Luxembourg international.

Borussia Mönchengladbach's Nathan N'Goumou had to train with a clearly visible bandage on Monday (January 9, 2023) because of hailstone in his eye.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nathan N’Goumou had to train with a clearly visible bandage on Monday (January 9, 2023) because of hailstone in his eye.

Another Gladbach professional, on the other hand, was back after a week’s break: Nathan N’Goumou (22)! The Frenchman recently had to take a break due to a hailstone in his eye, but trained again on Monday – with a clearly visible bandage around his eyes and head.

“The bandage looked spectacular and reminded me a bit of Horst Hrubesch. I also asked Nathan, but he didn’t understand the name,” smiles Farke when asked about N’Goumou. It was annoying because he had to take a week off because of a little story and the risk of infection,” says Farke. “But it’s good that he’s back.”

Especially now that winter preparations are entering their final stages, it’s important to have as many players as possible available in order to have good competition in the squad, according to the VfL coach.

“It’s already about positioning yourself and using every minute, every chance in training and in practice matches,” was the 46-year-old’s clear demand. “We currently have many fit players and good competition in the team, which we also need.”

The same applies to those fresh from a long-term injury, Farke says. “Of course, there are also some players who have had long injuries and cannot be 100% yet. But they are on the right track. The team is currently making a good impression.

In the next days of training and friendly matches, the main thing is to find a starting XI for the next Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen (January 22, 5.30 p.m.) and to work even more specifically in the tactical area than the was the case at the beginning of the preparation was.

Farke: “In general, we train everything from the start in preparation. There are no special blocks, we try to keep everything very complex. It will be the same for the next ten days. But of course it is also a question of finding a starting formation and working tactically in a little more detail. In the first weeks it was also about building physical substance, now it’s more about the technical and tactical aspects. In principle, we have come a long way and are on the right track.

Two friendlies in the current week should prepare the foals optimally for the start of the Bundesliga after the winter break. On Wednesday (January 11/2 p.m.), the Bas-Rhin team will face Arminia Bielefeld. Three days later, on Saturday (January 14, 2 p.m.), the team then tested against FC St. Pauli.

Moreover, the foals’ coach asks his team to visit the Borussia Park training ground six more times.
