Florian Neuhaus (25) and Hannes Wolf (23) made a comeback after a long injury break on Saturday January 7, 2023, in a friendly against VfB Oldenburg (2-0).

After the match, trainer Daniel Farke (46) revealed how he assessed the performances of the two professional foals and if the competitive return of the convalescents could soon be overdue.

Gladbach professionals Wolf and Neuhaus return after long injury break

Hannes Wolf and Florian Neuhaus were on the field for 62 minutes in the friendly match against Oldenburg (2-0) on Saturday January 7. Nothing unusual per se, as both are an integral part of Borussia Mönchengladbach’s professional squad.

However, considering the two weren’t an option for coach Daniel Farke for a long time due to long-term injuries, the roughly hour-long effort in the first friendly of the new year is quite remarkable.

We remember it: Neuhaus suffered a partial rupture of the rear cruciate ligament of the right knee in September 2022, had to cancel a possible participation in the World Championships and has not been available for foals since then – although the injury has was treated without surgery.

Wolf, on the other hand, also tore his shoulder joint labrum in September, required surgery, and hasn’t been able to play a competitive game since.

The appearance in Borussia’s last test match was a successful comeback for both which showed that both are on the right path. At least that’s what Coach Farke’s statements suggest.

The 46-year-old Colts’ coach said after the game when asked about the two comebacks: “We used the game to give both of them more game share. They should consciously go over the point to feel a bit the body because it was the first match for both of them in months.”

A task that both players mastered well, both Neuhaus on the ten and Wolf on the left wing were among the strengths in the first half.

Farke also appreciated that. “It was a good start. Both still have a way to go to get back to their peak form, but that’s normal. The minutes of the game were good and important for them, I’m happy with them,” concluded Borussia coach.

But: Does that even mean that the two Gladbach pros are again a squad option for the start of the Bundesliga after the winter break on January 22 (5:30 p.m.) against Bayer Leverkusen?

At least with Neuhaus, the chances of a competitive comeback are good, as Farke suggests: “We’ll have to see how it develops. But: Flo is fine, he supports the preparation well physically, we hardly ever need to out of training. He needs to get the feel of the position and the game back, it’s not that easy because we don’t have many friendlies and he can’t get more minutes in the game. But he is definitely a problem for the team against Leverkusen.

The same goes for Ko Itakura (25), who after his internal ligament injury made his comeback in the match against Borussia Dortmund before the winter break and then also played in the World Cup, but did not competitive game played for the Foals. since September had contested for a longer period of time.

The Japanese came on as a substitute in the second half of the test against Oldenburg and also made a good impression, as Farke reveals: “The World Cup games have done him good, he is very willful and open-minded and always shows great joy in training.”

However, the Gladbach coach did not yet want to commit to Itakura forming the duo of central defenders with Nico Elvedi (25) at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga.

“He has every chance of becoming a staple in our defense again, but the competition for that position is fierce at the moment. It was different when Chris Kramer had to help. Ko completed the first six Bundesliga games, but to be untouchable, we have to go a little further. We are still too big as a club to give that after six games.”
