Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Roland Virkus (56) has halted the transfer of goalkeeper Yann Sommer (34) to Bayern Munich – at least for now.
Because: As can be heard in FCB circles, Gladbach’s change veto is classified more as poker. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic (46) is also working full throttle in Qatar to solve the Munich keeper problem and has reportedly not given up hope of guiding Sommer to Säbener Straße after all.
Will Borussia still let the Swiss head to Munich with an adequate offer?
Nagelsmann classifies Sommer’s Gladbach swap veto as a game of poker
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s veto on Yann Sommer’s winter transfer to FC Bayern complicates the resolution of the goalkeeper problem with the German record champions.
However, the Munich team will not rule out the 34-year-old Swiss as a privileged candidate to replace captain Manuel Neuer (36), who will be absent at least until the end of the season after a broken leg. Basta from Mönchengladbach evaluated coach Julian Nagelsmann (35) on Sunday (8 January 2023) in the training camp as part of the poker transfer.
“I didn’t read the headlines and passed out,” Nagelsmann said in Doha. Looking at Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus, the Bayern coach remarked. “I think that’s part of the work you put on a straight face in this area.”
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic was also “usually working at full speed” on a solution in Qatar, Nagelsmann reported: “We are looking at what is happening in the transfer market.”
“We won’t give up on Yann Sommer. We also said that to Bayern,” Gladbach sporting director Virkus told the Rheinische Post on Saturday (January 7th). Sommer is said to be very eager for a change. His contract with Borussia expires at the end of the season. Gladbach could currently still get a transfer fee. In the room is a sum in the order of a million to one digit.
Moreover, Gladbach should find a replacement for Sommer. However, the alleged solution Gladbach’s Jonas Omlin (28) wants is currently not approved by his current club, HSC Montpellier. The second possible alternative, Philipp Köhn (24) from RB Salzburg, has a contract until 2025 and should therefore not come cheap for the foals.
Bonhof rejects Sommer’s request for release
According to information from “Sky”, the vice-president of Sommer Gladbach, Rainer Bonhof (70), personally asked for approval. However, Bonhof denied this on Sunday. “I don’t know, there’s nothing to be done. Our sporting director and our coach have made clear statements,” Bonhof told the German press agency. “Yann Sommer is a very down-to-earth and absolutely professional guy. He’s not going that way,” said the Borussia vice-president.
Salihamidzic also spoke on Saturday, but before Virkus’ statement was made public. “I don’t like talking about players from other clubs,” Salihamidzic said of the summer. “Obviously we are concerned about the goalkeeper issue. Manuel’s injury hurt us, that’s obvious. But now we will do our job, check the options and make a decision at some point.”
Besides Sommer, one option would be to bring Alexander Nübel (26), on loan to AS Monaco, back to Munich early. Bayern are expected to pay a transfer fee for the 26-year-old, although he is under contract with them until June 30, 2023. Salihamidzic said of the Nübel option: “We had very good communication between us, him and his management.”
Goalkeeper poker could still take time, even if the Bundesliga continues for Bayern on January 20 with the game against third-placed RB Leipzig. “The transfer market period runs until January 31. Until then, either we will do something or we won’t,” Salihamidzic said.
In training camp, Sven Ulreich (34) is Neuer’s current replacement. Moreover, without the Nübel on loan, Bayern only have young, inexperienced goalkeepers. Without a new goalkeeper, Bayern bosses believe the risk of being able to achieve the high goals of the season with this formation is too great. Nagelsmann still built ahead. He would also “trust” Ulreich in the number one role.
