Who will replace Manuel Neuer in goal for Bayern Munich? Yann Sommer seems to have the best cards at the moment – but Gladbach would also need a new keeper.
Munich – Manuel Neuer opened a big barrel with his ski touring project after the 2022 World Cup. The FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper broke his leg just before Christmas. Anyone who knows the ambitious world-class goalkeeper knows that the injury and the way it happened irritates him the most. However, his employer must now find a replacement for him as soon as possible. And it’s going to be tricky.
The most obvious option: Sven Ulreich. He was Neuer’s back-up for years and almost always did a good, reliable job. However, Bayern bosses are likely to want more international experience between their positions to replace Neuer for the rest of the season. In other words: a goalkeeper who plays regularly or who has already played in the Champions League. After all, Paris Saint-Germain is a real round of 16 for Bayern.
Who will replace Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal? Ulreich, Nübel and Sommer are considered alternatives
The second alternative: Alexander Nübel. He already belongs to FC Bayern and is currently on loan at Monaco. However, the relationship between the current employer and the former Schalke player has recently proven difficult. Nübel does not want to be a palliative, and the people of Munich do not want to fully commit to him as a future number one. And: Monaco are also expected to play the game of an early comeback campaign. A complicated mix.
The third option could be simpler: Yann Sommer. The Swiss at the service of Borussia Mönchengladbach is one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, experienced internationally thanks to his appearances with the Foals and the Nati. His contract in Bas-Rhin expires in the summer of 2023, and the 34-year-old apparently does not want to extend it. Gladbach can therefore only obtain a transfer fee for him in January. It shouldn’t be too high due to the short contract duration and low market value (five million euros).
FC Bayern are looking for a new replacement: Germany’s almost forgotten goalkeeper gem as a domino stone?
The problem Borussia officials have is obvious: if you let Sommer go, who will be the new number one in the VfL box? Substitute Tobias Sippel shouldn’t be seen as a dream solution. Gladbach would therefore need a new goalkeeper first. And perhaps an almost forgotten German goalkeeper gem comes into play: Finn Dahmen.
Bayern fans should know him, after all, the goalkeeper made his competitive debut for FSV Mainz 05 almost exactly two years ago (January 3, 2021) when they were guests at the Allianz Arena. Mainz led 2-0 at halftime, but had to give up at the end 2-5. Since then, Dahmen has rarely had the opportunity to excel. Robin Zentner has been blocking his way to number one for years, and the 24-year-old is considered one of Germany’s greatest goalkeeper talents.
Finn Dahmen: Mainz substitute goalkeeper as new number one after Gladbach?
Due to his short playing time, Dahmen has long thought about saying goodbye. His contract with Rheinhessen expires on June 30, 2023, after which a new chapter is expected to begin. The son of a German father and an Englishwoman announced months ago that he would leave Mainz. The goal is clear: finally win the training matches and become number one in a new club. However, this new club has yet to be found.
Here, at the latest, Borussia Mönchengladbach could come into play. With Finn Dahmen, the Foals could sign a young German goalkeeper with a lot of potential at relatively low cost this winter. At the same time, the way to Munich would be free for Yann Sommer, and in the end Gladbach would probably even show a transfer surplus. Sommer should definitely bring in more money than a possible Dahmen purchase would cost.
Domino stone Finn Dahmen: Mainz keeper could give carousel new impetus
There is currently no information from the surroundings of Gladbach that suggests an interest in Dahmen. A German U21 European champion who can definitely close a gap for cheap money, which will happen later this summer, should definitely be a sensible option. So will Finn Dahmen be the decisive domino for FC Bayern when Yann Sommer is replaced? The transfer window is open until January 31, until then there should be a lot of speculation.
There have been new developments around Sommer and FC Bayern recently. However, implementation does not seem in sight. (acl)
