- Not everything is going as planned at Liverpool this season.
- Jurgen Klopp faces difficult months.
- The trainer must find solutions.
The time of
Liverpool FC: A lot of problems this season
Shortly after the start of the year, a look at the English Premier League table is very exciting. It is not Manchester City who find themselves in first place, but Arsenal FC. The Gunners got 44 out of a possible 51 points.
But it is also exciting that top teams such as Chelsea FC or Liverpool FC are far behind their real ambitions. The Reds, coached by Jürgen Klopp, still believed a duel with Manchester City for the title.
Reality: Liverpool are 16 points behind Arsenal. In the last league match at FC Brentford in London, there was a 1:3 defeat. Defense in particular raised questions. 22 goals conceded in 17 games does not match Klopp’s idea of compactness.
Defense chief Virgil van Dijk does not shine week after week, but allows slight fluctuations in the form curve. Moreover, he is now injured. Injuries are a factor anyway, but they have also been around in recent years and could be compensated for. Not this time.
Jürgen Klopp wins now
A lot has not been easy for Liverpool FC this season, and the team have to admit that. Top newcomer Darwin Nunez, who came from Benfica for €80m, is yet to score consistently. He shows very good approaches, but he still lacks insensitivity.
Additionally, key players such as Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, who were expected to take on more responsibility following Sadio Mane’s departure from Bayern, have been injured. But that’s no excuse as the Reds still have a luxury squad at their disposal.
Especially since Klopp has shown in recent years that he can reinvent himself in difficult situations and stabilize the team. He lost that ability in the current season, at least he can’t use it in a way that the team regains consistency.
Good performances are quickly followed by setbacks, with defeats against Nottingham and Leeds, for example. The rest of the season is likely to become very complicated and now the best coach is needed to put the team back on track.
Jürgen Klopp must solve these problems
Klopp can’t influence the injury situation, but he can make sure his team’s fundamental issues are addressed. Defensive stability needs to be worked on.
There isn’t a lot of time to practice because of the schedule, but game building needs to be more structured again and control needs to take priority over risk. With more control of the game and possession of the ball, the Reds would also be less likely to come up against counter-attacks resulting from the rush of the game.
Moreover, the offense still needs more efficiency. Cody Gakpo, new recruit from PSV Eindhoven, could take care of it. Jürgen Klopp needs to integrate him as soon as possible due to the personnel situation. His determination and his march towards the goal could be decisive. But he must also be placed in the right positions, the offensive structure must also be adapted to him.
It is also important that away games are more successful again. In eight games in place of the opponent, Liverpool could score only eight points. It’s far too little. Here, the Reds often played into the hands of opponents with strong counter-attacks as they lacked dominance in midfield.
After the departure of Wijnaldum, a top player is missing in midfield who combines dynamism, defensive movements and avant-garde. In the summer of 2022, the Reds failed to react to the problem that was already there, and no new signings are expected in midfield in the winter either.
Is Klopp’s time at Liverpool running out?
Even though the situation is not comparable to that of Borussia Dortmund back then, Jürgen Klopp is also struggling with major problems at Liverpool for the first time in seven years. At this time, the cooperation ended after a very successful period at the end of the season.
This scenario, at least, does not seem unthinkable. Fans love Klopp, but there are also critical voices holding him accountable, as well as the decision makers currently accountable.
Mistakes have been made, projects ignored. A summer farewell, a sabbatical year then a new attack, for example as Ancelotti’s successor at Real Madrid or even as national coach? It would also be very attractive for Klopp. But there is still a lot to do until then.
His winter adjustments should come to nothing, summer transfer plans would come to a halt. Just as likely as a split is the signing of a top player like Jude Bellingham this summer and a fresh attack on the biggest titles with Liverpool FC. Only the pressure is currently stronger than ever.
