From scapegoat to popular figure: Hasan Salihamidzic looks back on a turbulent period as sporting director of FC Bayern Munich.

“During the pandemic, we had to make decisions that weren’t popular – it was partly projected onto me: it left its mark, there was also a kind of criticism that I won’t forget” , he revealed in “Sport Bild”.

Since then, however, the mood towards him has changed: “Today I notice a difference on the street in the way people approach me. And I’m happy about that.”

Hainer praises Salihamidzic’s transfer strategy

As well Herbert Hainer, the president of FC Bayern, draws up a positive intermediate assessment for Salihamidzic. “He got exactly the players we needed and at the same time made a lot of money from our departures,” he praised in an interview with “Abendzeitung”.

Salihamidzic has been responsible for FC Bayern’s transfer planning since August 2017 – initially as sporting director and since summer 2020 as sporting director. The interim balance: Since the summer of 2017, according to “transfermarkt.de”, a total of around 527.25 million euros have been spent on transfers and 300.6 million euros have been earned through player sales .

This results in a transfer in less than 226.65 million euros. A sum that should be easy to exceed given the high income of FC Bayern. According to ‘statista.com’, FC Bayern AG has made a total profit of 81.7 million euros after tax since the 2017 financial year.

Only a few flops, but a few bargains

Salihamidzic only had a few real flops. Michaël Cuisance, who signed up for eight million euros, can be described as such. However, the loss was limited as the Frenchman was sold in January 2022 for around four million euros.

Right-back Bouna Sarr, who signed for eight million euros and was never able to win in Munich, is still under contract until the summer of 2024. A sale should be sought.

On the other hand, Salihamidzic also managed a few transfer moves. Jamal Musiala was dropped from Chelsea’s youth academy on a free transfer in the summer of 2019 and is now one of the most valuable footballers in the world. Also the obligations of Alphonse Davies (€10m transfer fee), Leon Goretzka (free transfer fee) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (free transfer) were good deals.

Moreover, Mathys Tel, one of the biggest attacking talents in the world, was signed last summer for a (relatively modest) fee of €20m.

Bayern’s squad has ‘a good base’ in prospect

With an average age of 25.7, FC Bayern has the fifth oldest team in the Bundesliga. However, with Thomas Müller, Choupo-Moting (both 33) and the two goalkeepers Manuel Neuer (36) and Sven Ulreich (34), only four players are over 30.

On the other hand, nine players are under 25 years old. Among them are next Musiala and Such other young players with world-class potential such as Dayot Upamecano (24 years old), Matthijs de Ligt (23 years old) or Alphonso Davies (22 years old).

“If you look at our team in perspective, we have a very good base for the years to come,” Hainer said, praising Salihamidzic. “In the future, we will definitely need adaptations and additions, but not a complete conversion. It’s thanks to Hasan, as well as the fact that we are getting more and more great young players from campus. , like Josip Stanisic, who advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup with Croatia.”

In the end, Salihamidzic and FC Bayern “had nothing to laugh about”

Salihamidzic has seen in recent months that compliments on his transfer strategy have done him good. He seemed more open and happier, and he seemed to laugh more often in public than before.

“There were times when it was difficult to show that ease and zest for life – as mentioned during the pandemic: the dull matches without spectators, the financial worries. You don’t walk around laughing,” recalls Salihamidzic . However, the club coped well with these tough times: “We are one of the few clubs that has continued to show positive numbers.”

Regarding the transfers, there was “great support from the supervisory board and a consensus within the board of directors. That is why we were able to implement our ideas very early on – and in the end, everything the world had more to laugh about.” Especially Salihamidzic.
