Bremen – The past few years have been turbulent to tragic at SV Werder Bremen – now, in 2022, things have finally looked up. Next New Year’s fireworks: In the second second division match of the year, Werder Bremen and SC Paderborn delivered a veritable exchange of blows with several dream goals. When the East Westphalians lead 3-1 after almost an hour, the match seems decided – but that’s when things really start. Romano Schmid and Niclas Füllkrug equalized for Werder and then more goals were canceled on both sides before Ömer Toprak popped the ball at his hip shortly before the end and from there 4-3 into the goal. 3) April 23, 2022: FC Schalke 04 – Werder Bremen 1:4

Exclamation point in promotion race: Werder Bremen dismantled Schalke 04, after less than an hour of play it was already 4-0. Ilia Gruev with his first professional goal, Niclas Füllkrug and double packer Marvin Ducksch score the goals. Werder retook the second division lead from the royal blues, but lost it again the next day. At the end of the season, the two Bundesliga teams found themselves in the top two places.

4) May 15, 2022: Werder Bremen – Jahn Regensburg 2-0

Victory, rise, celebration: It’s all or nothing on the last day of the second division season. Direct ascent is just as possible as falling to bitter fourth place. But Werder Bremen kept a cool head in the home game against Jahn Regensburg, delivered a combative and confident performance – and for once it all happened without the Werder drama that has become so typical. Of course, it was Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch who took the 2-0 victory. And then it’s time to party: fans storm the pitch, players drink from oversized beer glasses and finally cross the Jubeltraube on the Osterdeich in a truck. SV Werder is back in the Bundesliga!

Back in league 1: 441 days after relegation, SV Werder Bremen are back in the Bundesliga. Against VfL Wolfsburg, Ole Werner’s team showed from day one that they were absolutely competitive. After falling behind at the start, the Hanseatic League turned things around with a double strike from Niclas Füllkrug and Leonardo Bittencourt and played furiously at times. When Josuha Guilavogui made it 2-2 shortly before the end and saved a point for ‘Wolves’, Bremen was annoyed, but they could rely on the performance they had shown.

6) August 20, 2022: Borussia Dortmund – Werder Bremen 2:3

Catch-up of the decade: If a promoted team is trailing 2-0 against a Champions League club with one minute left in regular time, the game is probably over 99.9% over. But not this Saturday in the summer of 2022, not with SV Werder Bremen! The green-whites rock the game against Borussia Dortmund in six minutes – jokers Lee Buchanan (89th), Niklas Schmidt (90th + 3) and Oliver Burke (90th + 5) leave the yellow wall of Signal Iduna Park silent. 7) September 24, 2022: Claudio Pizarro’s farewell game

Gracias Claudio – Adios Piza: A big farewell for a Werder legend! In the sold-out Wohninvest Weser Stadium, Claudio Pizarro plays his farewell match – played like a small tournament between a Werder Legends team, an FC Bayern Legends team and a selection of “Claudios Amigos”. But who cares about sports these days? It’s a big party for one of the greatest to ever wear the Werder shirt. At the end, Pizarro goes to the obligatory farewell round with tears in his eyes, takes off his shoes and places them symbolically in the central circle. Goose flesh!

8) October 1, 2022: Werder Bremen – Borussia Mönchengladbach 5:1

Gala against Gladbach: The curse is broken! With a ceremony, SV Werder Bremen rewards its supporters who have been waiting for a home victory in the Bundesliga since February 2021. Already at the start, the green-whites are rolling over the “colts”, which had caused Werder’s relegation to the same place a year and a half earlier. Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch make it 3-0 early, before the break Ramy Bensebaini of Gladbach scores an own goal. 9) October 7, 2022: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – Werder Bremen 1:2

Bundesliga top flight: After the show against Gladbach, Werder Bremen also beat ambitious TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 2-1 – thanks to goals from, of course, Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug. Werder Women’s Milestone: This game is historic! For the first time, the footballers of SV Werder Bremen are playing a Bundesliga match in the Wohninvest Weser stadium – in front of more than 20,000 fans. The game against SC Freiburg was lost 2-1 despite a dream goal from Nina Lührßen, but it was the best advertisement for women’s football and somehow it was a big exclamation point for SV Werder.
