The overall picture matches. After the knockout this summer in the promotion relegation against Hertha BSC (1-0, 0-2), HSV attack again in the new season with coach Tim Walter (47) and a barely modified squad .
At half-time in the 2nd division, Hamburg is on course: 17 games, 34 points, 2nd place… The spectators (average for home games 50,627) are enthusiastic.
Nevertheless, there are not only beaming faces in the Volkspark. Power struggles, high thieves, doping scandal.
BILD says who was among the winners in 2022 and who was among the losers.
► Ludovit rice (22) is the monster running and tackling HSV. In addition, the midfield is becoming more and more dangerous. HSV extended the deal with the Dutchman in November until 2026.
After the doping case involving Mario Vuskovic (21), Reis is now the most valuable player in the second division. The “Transfermarkt.de” portal estimates him at five million euros.
Reis (who arrived on a free transfer from FC Barcelona) has developed like no other HSV professional since joining the Volkspark in 2021.
In the preliminary round, he led the second most duels in the 2nd league (511), is in the top mileage (186 km) and intensive runs. He also learned how to score goals in Hamburg. There are three hits in the current round.
If HSV wants to keep him in the summer, the club will have to ramp up.
► To feel like a winner in the end, you have to Jonas Boldt (40) with HSV in the summer – after five years in the 2nd division – promoted to the Bundesliga. But: The last few weeks could hardly have gone better for the sports council.
Extended contract (until 2025) with new CFO Dr. Eric Huwer (39), another confidant of the executive floor, won the month-long power struggle with the head of the supervisory board and chairman Marcell Jansen (37 years old).
While Jansen has to submit a bid to be eliminated at the general meeting of HSV eV (21.1.23), Boldt can continue to structure the sport. Coach Tim Walter (47) and young boss Horst Hrubesch (71) must extend, scout leader Claus Costa (38) to become a professional boss. By the way, all familiar Boldt.
► Hardly anyone would have believed the U21s capable of such a series before the season. With the youngest regional league team in Germany (19.6 years on average), HSV has the best professional base in the 4th league. After a frenzied second half of the preliminary round (10 games, 25 points), HSV-Bubis are in second place in the Regionalliga North.
While some top talent have made their professional debuts, coaches are coming pit reimers (39) more and more in the sights of second and third division teams.
The football teacher is in his 16th season (!) with the club and has worked his way up from the U12s to the second team. In his third men’s series, Reimers steps forward with a big chest. The bosses, Horst Hrubesch (71) and Jonas Boldt (40), are convinced of their own growth. Ex-boss Bernhard Peters (62) was too.
► Tim Leibold (29) was a central figure in HSV. Model king in HSV’s first year under former coach Dieter Hecking (58), captain under Hecking’s successor Daniel Thioune (48). Always a leader and a very good guy.
An accident completely changed Leibold’s status. Torn cruciate ligament on October 26, 2021 during the Cup match in Nuremberg (5:3 nE). Since then, the defender has played just 126 league minutes.
When Leibold fought back after his injury, Walter relied on his competitor Miro Muheim (24). In the fall, the veteran missed seven more games with a torn muscle fiber.
Leibold’s contract expires after four years this summer. Will his time at HSV end then?
► With hindsight, the start was symptomatic. Led as a member of the Supervisory Board Dr Thomas Würtfeld (54) a year ago, interviews with Dr. Éric Huwer (39). Huwer was then to become chief financial officer. A deal was struck with a handshake. A few days later, Wüstefeld did the job himself.
The entrepreneur was with HSV for nine months as CFO. Hardly any era has been characterized by so many negative stories, trench warfare and half-truths.
Wüstefeld and the sports bosses around Jonas Boldt (40 years old) and Tim Walter (47 years old) have been in contact for a long time. The coach even kicked the board out of the locker room.
At the end of September, Wüstefeld (who had been delegated by the supervisory board for one year) resigned. He is still on board as a shareholder (owns 5.07% of HSV Fußball AG).
► All the signs pointed to a great career. mario vuskovic (21) was on the verge of joining the Croatia national team and was seen as HSV’s silverware.
After a positive doping control (September 16), he is threatened with a career break. The centre-back had been found in possession of the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO), and the B sample (December 15) confirmed the result.
The DFB control commission is investigating, the lawyers for Vuskovic and HSV are currently preparing their opinion. At the end of January, beginning of February, the case will be heard before the sports court. The chances of success are slim.
A lot of money is at stake for HSV. The club transferred more than four million euros (first rental fee, then transfer fee) to Hajduk Split. If found guilty, Vuskovic’s market value would be nil.
